America DIY is an online “Main Street” connecting contractors and builders with vendors of bulk landscaping goods like mulch, sod and stone. In my capacity at Oniracom, I designed the logo and brand look and feel.

As the creative director at Oniracom, I was tasked with building a visual presence for InStyle Fragrances on Amazon. This involved a creative use of images and color to tell an aspirational (but price-conscious) brand story.

2018-2019

As the creative director of Oniracom, I led the development of a cannabis brand called Pacific Stone.

This included updating existing labeling and creating packaging design, stylistic elements and brand guide, video and photo production and much more.

Oniracom put together a nice case study about the project.

We also built their website.

2023

AI security startup UpSighthired me to develop their logo, brand colors, visual identity, typography, iconography and brandbook. The brief was simple: stand out from the crowd of similarly-boring shield logos and blue text that dominates the AV security space. Create a logo that represents the “threat graph” of sentence-like predictive modeling of cyber attacks. I think it came out great. View the brandbook here.

Phase two of the project was redesigning their website to align visually and be fully mobile responsive, driving traffic to sign up for a product demo.

Design work for dating app: TicketMingle.

TicketMingle gives you access to exclusive, exciting live events. Meet and chat with other Minglers, purchase and be offered tickets and make plans to go together, all through the app. It’s the ultimate meeting space for like-minded passionate people.

I traveled to Japan to create marketing materials for Touan Porcelain, a maker of fine Kyoto earthenware.

I wrote the copy and designed the brochure and the beautiful photos were taken by my talented friend and collaborator Dane Hodgson.

Political campaign website for Tony Becerra, one of my karate senseis, who ran for City Council. Project included directing a photoshoot, developing brand styles, website design, interactive map design, etc.

2017-2019

Started my dear friend Phil. Ashland Leather is a successful heritage leathergoods brand based in Chicago.

They needed a sitewide refresh for their Shopify e-commerce platform and a big photoshoot of all of their products. I directed the whole thing, including spot-healing the specks on hundreds of wallet photos.

Here’s an Oniracom case study about how our focus on visual storytelling was a gamechanger for Ashland.

During the first wave of coronavirus craziness, I helped Phil design and brand a give-back program called Makers United. I also assisted him on a cool pitch for a whiskey bottle.

Embra is a cannabis company whose logo, branding, merchandise and packaging I developed at Oniracom. This process culminated in a lifestyle shoot directed and concepted by me and shot by the immensely talented Elena Kulikova.

I recently had the privilege of helping a fledgling automotive lifestyle podcast come up with its name, branding and logo roundel. It was a rewarding project and I can’t wait to hear what Horsepower Heritage has cooked up.

2018

As the creative director of Oniracom, I led the project to name, define and brand a sports nasal respiration product called Intake Breathing.

2015-2019

For several years, I was the creative director/brand chief of a financial tech startup called MoveCU, an online loan shopping platform for credit unions.

During my time there, I redefined the brand voice and logo and developed the UI/UX designs that established the company’s web/mobile presence.

Working with Oniracom to update EDEC DIgital Forensics’ web presence, I creative directed both lifestyle and product shoots, designed the Shopify store and refined the brand’s visual language.

They make neat portable Faraday bags that keep criminals and thieves out of radio-connected devices like laptops and phones.

2019

My oldest and closest friend Chris started a popular guitar review channel on YouTube, so of course I had to design the merch.

Inspired by 18th century medical textbooks and black metal imagery, The Guitar Pit’s shirts have become something of a cult collector’s item.

For several years I worked as a contractor for the marketing department of Airpush, a mobile advertising platform, developing external-facing materials for advertising clients and app developers.

I helped create and launch the branding for VirtualSky VR with the same team.

Picking up where another agency left off, I helped Oniracom adapt an existing logo icon to a new brand name for organic hydroponic foods.

Living Greens underwent a name change and needed to update all its labeling to reflect the new brand, with nutrition and compliance information printable on a variety of form factors.

I also led the design team on Living Greens’ website, including some illustrated icons.

2019–2023

A personal client of mine, Pantex Bioanalysis is a drug-testing lab that needed a brand update to reach a wider lab science customer base.

This included a deep logo design process; we eventually landed on a stylized testosterone molecule. I also created a brand book, business cards, letterhead and a print advertisement.

I created the logo, branding, trade show presentations and tech sell sheets for the N=1 Checker FAI, a printed circuitboard first-article inspection device, manufactured by Newly Tsuchiyama in Japan. Brand localization, translation, script writing, promo video creative direction.

2017

I created brand guidelines, styles, merch and posters for a conservation-driven concert and lecture event while freelancing with Oniracom.

The eye-catching EQ logo was created by Jane Masterson.

I believe the posters were never used (they went with a Scott Hansen/Tycho design, and who can blame them).

But the results came out pretty clean anyway and I’m proud of the work we did, so it’s worth showcasing here.

2022 Edit: turns out my graphics did wind up at the bottom of a big Instagram spread in 2017. Tycho’s work is still better. —NB

I designed the graphics for two innovative guitar pedal enclosures designed by Phil Kalas and Brian Peters at Dynamo Electric Audio.

I also designed the instructional documentation and some web graphics.

Various labels and packaging concepts for for alcoholic beverages, THC and food. Some got made, others didn’t, each was a good learning experience for the challenges of designing flat graphics applied to three-dimensional products. Adobe Dimension is simple and powerful.

A private PR client of mine wanted graphical/iconic illustrations of a set of four concepts around the pitfalls of paper bag taxes. I created a sympathetic bag character to help drive the concept home.

2020 - 2022

Logo refresh, website redesign and ground-up brand styleguide for contract furniture solution Interra. Interra had already done some preliminary logo and color work, so I refined the typography and line work, winnowed their palette and created fresh visual hierarchy as well as rethinking the way their product lines are displayed on-site.

I was part of the rebrand team for famed Italian window makers Albertini. The first logo in the stack is the one they ended up using but I thought it would be kind of interesting to showcase the whole evolution.

Edit: Thank goodness they went with the simple lowercase wordmark instead of the negative-space n between the two i’s, because I have since noticed an uncanny similarity with the Gemini Man logo.

A waste-management startup founded by Joe and Steve Malfo (of AmericaDIY fame), WasteX provides hauling and disposal services to the city of Santa Maria and is developing innovative technology for tracking and managing pickups and deliveries. I developed their logo, branding and produced a pitch book that secured an ongoing city contract.

Working with Oniracom. I created a visual brand for Santa Barbara-based philosopher poet Noah benShea.

Beyond simply an excuse to create some fancy visuals around someone who shares my first name, the NBS project was an opportunity to create a brand that is thoughtful, masculine and decidedly non-techy.
